SPACE RESOURCES PROFESSIONAL COURSE

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This 2-day intensive course aims to provide a broad overview of the space resources field, including the current knowledge of available resources in the Solar System; resource identification, collection, extraction, and processing systems; space manufacturing and construction technologies; infrastructure; economic and technical feasibility studies; government, private sector, and entrepreneurship activities, legal, policy, and socio-economic issues; and space exploration architectures and commercial ventures that may be enabled by utilizing extraterrestrial resources. 

The course culminates with teams of participants developing a space resource utilization plan to identify, extract, and use resources from space.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

At the completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify type and classification of space resources

  2. Explain the state of space resources exploration, availability, and technologies associated with their value chain, including identification, recovery, extraction, processing, and utilization

  3. Analyze technological solutions, business models, and policy positions in space resources

  4. Compare and contrast methods of space resources utilization

  5. Assess current technological, economic, social, and legal challenges in space resources

  6. Apply the material learned in the course in a team project to create a utilization plan that incorporates the knowledge of resources found at various destinations, the technologies needed to extract and process them into useful products, and their potential customers
